Alert to Grey Line: New Attraction in the Mission

While it's clear that there are three top tourist attractions in San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge, the Giant Sundial and Alfie's Troll Altar, I have lately noticed one that might be number four on the list. Though the displays lack Alfie's Vegas extravaganza panache, the apartment building at the northwest corner of 21st and South Van Ness has got some pretty groovy stuff going on.

Check the unit on the third floor, west end and look up. Not sure what all is up there, but it looks pretty dern good.

What's It All About?

Does your neighborhood have a Troll Doll altar? Well, mine does. Ever creative and topical Alfie over at 18th and Valencia has the best window display in the Pacific time zone. Sometimes you can also see his sweet kitties in next window, and he told me once that he has to cat-proof his public display of the trolls. I've not yet met Alfie in person, but he's kind enough to give the Junkster a plug now and then, and we're happy to return the favor for this Mission landmark. Check out the great archives of past displays at his site.

Trolling 24/7

Sometimes I actually find something in San Francisco that makes me think there is a reason to live here other than the fact it doesn't get hot very often (though I was definitely ready to pack it up last summer). One of those reasons is the little "troll window" or shrine or altar at 18th and Valencia. The only thing that comes remotely close is that store in the Haight that always has a Mr. Magoo mannequin in drag or a pirate costume. Luckily, Alfie, the talent behind that ever changing window of perpetual whimsy, has his own blogspot. What the world needs now is a lot more whimsy. Great work Alfie! You are a true jewel in the Mission.
