Pet Rocks, Freakies, Sambos and More
I'd like to recommend a new addition to the blog roll and a nice launch for 2008 that looks back on the oddities of the recent past, especially the 1970s and 1980s. "Gavin Elster" in Southern California (the Brocklebank has never been as classy since he left) has retired his Sequioa Sempervirens site with the close of 2007 and launched They All Come Back.
Did you eat Freakies cereal as a kid? Did you house train a Pet Rock? Did you go for blintzes at Sambo's? Then don't just sit there, head over to They All Come Back right now.
I don't know if he'd agree, but I think Gavin is something of a Junk Thief himself.

I spent way too much time today reading that blog. It was worth it for the Freakies cereal flashback alone.
Dave - I kinda guessed you'd be a Freakies fan. This blog is very addictive, making me want to head down to Sambo's in Santa Barbara right now to arrive in time for sunrise and a plate of blueberry blintzes. Yum. We need to get him to do a piece about Gravy on a Stick.
Come to Louisiana, we'll get pecan log rolls at Stuckey's!
Dave - I'd love to visit you and Stuckey's. May I bring my Pet Rock?
I TOTALLY had a pet rock, as stupid as I feel about that now. It's kinda still a cute idea, though.
JDZS - Not just cute, but the inventor was a genius at marketing and managing to get people to buy something that they have in their back yard. Though, I'm sure there are people in my neighborhood who would write: "Rocks take millions of years to form and countless geological elements to be created. Next time, don't buy a rock, let it remain in its natural habitat."
what a deprived childhood I must have had - and I've never even heard of freakies cereal.
but I wasn't a total mushroom, I remember pet rocks - I had a real nice collection in the garden bed!
Kimy - This was my introduction to Freakies too, but I sure wish I'd known them. I could see us hanging out around that tree. Don't tell anyone, but I have a huge pet rock collection, though I didn't buy them in a pre-packaged box. I just pick them up by the beach and riverside. How very anti-capitalist of me!
I am honored to have Junk Thief as my first visitor to this new blog. I thought it would be nice to focus on things that are no longer popular but are still around in one form or another.
Gavin - I sort of fall into that camp -- old, still around but no longer popular. However, like Elaine Stritch, I'm waiting until I pass 80 to sing "I'm Still Here".
BTW Gravy on a Stick sound deeelish. Is it a frozen treat? Mmmm nothing shuts those screaming sugarmonkies up faster than a mouthful of frozen brown gravy.
Gavin - Wellll...since it's still just a concept in my head, it's still in development, though Tugboat Dave keeps giving me encouragement to bring it to Louisiana. I'd say it's frozen and then nice and runny as you pull it out of the nuke machine.
As soon as I saw Stuckey's....I had to stop.
An hour or so later.....here I am, still in a lovely daze.
thank you!
(I think)
Jason - Glad you stopped in, and as the site says...They All Come Back. I'm glad you're in a pleasant haze, but wish it were pecan log induced.
