A Lot Less People to Worry About, And A Lot More People That Care
Oh, I may have to fly to Park City to blast out of the mid-winter doldrums. The movie Smile 'Til It Hurts: The Up With People Story is apparently taking Sundance by storm. It really sounds like just my kind of movie.
For the many readers who likely are too young to know what Up With People was all about, it's hard for them to imagine. I just remember being dragged to see them by a Republican uncle who was intent on proving to me that not all young people wanted to join the Jefferson Airplane. (The last 20 seconds of this clip introduces you to the Up With People fairies.)

Damn, I really want to see this movie. I can still remember a little group of Up With People people performing at my elementary school in the early 70s, but I never really knew what they were all about. They're like the Peace Corps with jazz hands!
P.S. I totally want to join the Jefferson Airplane.
Dave - This is one cult from the 1960s and 1970s that makes the Manson Family and the SLA look benign.
Hey, I understand they're still around and need a perky banjo player, but the beard will have to go. I'm with you on the Jefferson Airplane.
I hope the documentary makes it to the cleveland film festival - this year I am planning around the film festival - alas, last year I missed the whole thing! and what a loss that was....a cultural highlight of our fair city
Mouse - I hope it makes it there too. My coworker will be there speaking after a film about Togo.
I'm going to try and volunteer so I can get some free passes....that's my new plan...will try and find the toga flick....
Mouse - That's great. Though it's a Togo not toga flick, though the latter sounds intriguing.
Yes, what did that line mean "A lot less people to worry about..."?
Scary. Glen Close was in Up as Gleen Close.
Bryce - Weren't you in the Orange County Chapter with Karen and Richard Carpenter?
The only thing I know about Up with People is that on an episode of "Good Times," circa 1977, the character of Michael wanted to join and had to get the permission of mother Florida Evans, who had her reservations about it.
Very sad, my cultural knowledge, isn't it?
Joe - A wise woman, that Florida Evans.
