JTTV Season 4, Episode 5 - Sundial Explained

Word among the smart set is that 2010 and the teens will be the era of Amish chic. While Lady Gaga seems to represent the last desperate act of the excess and consumption driven 1990s and aughts, Amish fashion shows that restraint and the less is more aesthetic bring great hope for the decade ahead.

The real estate crash and financial market breakdowns have brought great trauma for those of the Humvee/McMansion/120 inch plasma HD TV set, but little has changed for the Amish the past two years. And they are as stylish as ever in their basic black with white trim.

Those who read Parade magazine -- that harbinger of cutting edge style and cultural tipping points -- are already well aware of the sensational Heat Surge heaters with hand glued Amish mantles that perfectly merge old world craftsmanship and made-in-China/assembled-Mexico technology.

Now the de Young Museum is featuring "Amish Abstractions". While the Amish are known for abstaining for mind-altering substances, one look at these psychedelic quilts will leave you asking "What you been smokin', bro'?"

While Junk Thief TV host Alton V. Yowells, VII, is recovering from his own encounter with mind altering substances in our last episode, Bryce Digdug has stepped in to host our latest episode and introduce the hottest trend-setting accessory that will let the world know you are gladly leaving the aughts behind and on the cutting edge of the teens. Order yours today. Only two orders per household.

On the Set

Bryce Digdug dropped by today, and he made a return appearance for an upcoming Junk Thief TV episode (the one after the next one). After a breezy studio shoot, we headed out to Ingleside for a location shoot. We planned to solve one mystery (which we accomplished) but had a surprise extra dividend of discovering Hearse Castle above. It was a perfect mix of the Addams Family and Edgar Winter.

I'd love to tell you more about the feature mystery, but if I did I'd have to kill you. Just stay tuned for episode five coming soon.

Where's That Cake? Here's That Cake

Robert Happysad expressed concern that my recent tea party tableau looked so lovely but was missing the all important cake. Hello Kitty! dropped by this evening and took care of that. She also left a hamburger. She left a lot more, but we're saving that for just now.

I'm Becoming Henry Darger!

This evening after work I needed to nab some things in the land of Big Box Stores (sorry, I own a fuel efficient car and I vote), and afterward I could not resist driving to the other side of the 280 and stepping into DAISO. I spent barely $50, but my bounty was huge. This is not even 5% of it. And with barely anything priced over $3, they make it so hard to resist. Expect a really cool episode of Junk Thief TV in the near future.

Beat to the Punch

Dang, just when I was going to make a video of Junk Thief rapping and strolling through the 'hood, here is Azeem doing the same thing. Love the guest cameo by Heather Fong.

All the same, on Friday I will be collaborating on a video collaboration to submit to the NY Artists' Cringe Festival. Top secret at the moment, but details to follow.

Thanks to Allan at Mission Mission for tipping me off on this.

Way to Go Wago

"It doesn't have to make sense, it just has to take up space."
- Tugboat Dave

That quote from Dave was used a few months back to describe Junk Thief TV and what he attributed as being an inspiration for a great video he did that featured miniature horses and random New Orleans tomfoolery. This season of Junk Thief TV has been really sparse, and more than once I've been tempted to give it up since such nuisances as having a job, a life and foster dogs has sort of gotten in the way. (Though "The Bow Show" may be coming soon.) There hasn't exactly been a screaming mob whining "We want our Junk Thief TV", but like it or not we may end up having a few episodes here and there.

Tonight I got some good inspiration from a dozen or more short films by the video-artist Wago Kreider at Artists' Television Access over on Valencia. ATA brags that they bring you videos guaranteed to "mess with your head", and some of Wago's really did with lots of micro-edits and wacky recycling of Hitchcock, Sirk and Ray among others. My absolute favorite was "Vienna in the Desert" that used unedited sound from Johnny Guitar with contemporary footage shown above from what I assume was Lake Mono, but I don't know my desert landmarks that well.

When I first moved to SF, I went to screenings very regularly at ATA after feeling a real void after being involved in the documentary world of Manhattan and longing to be near video nerds. I sort of let my visits lapse, and it was nice to be back. Maybe there will even be a new JTTV coming soon.

Stay tuned...
